What is an Industrial Historian?

An Industrial Historian enables organizations to capture, store, and query data from SCADA, PLC, DCS, and other operational systems. However, utilities and industrial organizations no longer need to simply retain information. They need to contextualize data, detect anomalies, and support operational decision-making in real time.

The question is no longer just which Historian to choose, but whether the platform will help transform data into operational advantage.

1. What problem are you trying to solve? 

Before discussing technology, it is important to clarify the objective: Do we need historical traceability for auditing or compliance purposes? Do we want to improve real-time operations? Are we looking for predictive maintenance? Do we need to meet regulatory requirements? Do we want to optimize assets and infrastructure?

It is common for an organization to implement a Historian thinking only about data storage, only to discover months later that it actually needed analytical capabilities that were never considered in the first place.

2. How will your data grow? 

Sizing a platform for 100,000 tags is not the same as sizing one for 10 million. It is important to consider how many signals there will be, how frequently they will be captured, how the number of assets will grow, and whether IoT or Edge Computing will be incorporated. Many traditional Historians become more expensive at precisely this point: the more tags, the higher the cost..

The platform must be able to scale with new sensors, connected assets, and IoT without compromising performance or increasing costs disproportionately.

3. What data sources must it integrate? 

Today, data does not come only from SCADA systems. It is important to consider whether the platform can connect to PLCs, SCADA, DCS, GIS systems, ERP, CMMS, quality management systems, APIs, and cloud-based data sources. IT/OT convergence is no longer a future trend; it is a fundamental requirement from the outset.

4. Does it store data or generate knowledge? 

Probably the most important question on this list. A traditional Historian answers the question, “What happened?” An Operational Intelligence platform also answers “Why did it happen?” and “What will happen if we continue like this?”

5. Does it enable information contextualization? 

Isolated data provides little value. It is important to assess whether the platform can relate data to assets, alarms to production, maintenance to operations, and events to business KPIs. Value emerges when all this information is connected and understood in context.

6. Does it provide AI and advanced analytics capabilities? 

Can it detect anomalies? Does it support Machine Learning? Can it build predictive models or recommend actions? A Historian is no longer just a repository. Increasingly, organizations expect the platform to think, not just store data.

7. Does it operate in Real Time? 

What is the latency? Does it process streaming events? Does it generate instant alerts? Does it allow operators to act on processes while they are happening, rather than after the fact? This is the real boundary between a Historian and an Operational Intelligence platform.

8. Does it handle out-of-sequence data? 

A less visible but critical challenge, especially in utilities, energy, water, and telecommunications: what happens when data arrives late? How does it manage industrial backfill? Does it preserve temporal context and automatically recalculate affected indicators?

10. Does it make data easy to use? 

Users need dashboards, reporting capabilities, GIS visualization, and self-service access to information without having to rely on IT for every query.

11. How does it address cybersecurity? 

This is particularly relevant in critical infrastructure environments. OT/IT segregation, access traceability, and granular permission management are questions that should be asked of any vendor, including us, before making a decision.

12. What is the total cost of ownership? 

It is not just about the initial licensing cost. Infrastructure, maintenance, scalability, training, and future integrations must also be evaluated. This is where many organizations encounter unexpected surprises: licensing models based on tag volume can significantly increase costs as the business grows, even if the value delivered by the platform remains unchanged.

13. Is there vendor lock-in? 

APIs, open standards, and data export capabilities help preserve technological flexibility and avoid excessive dependence on a single vendor.

14. Is it really a Historian or an Operational Intelligence platform?

The market is evolving from Historians, focused on storing data, toward Operational Intelligence platforms capable of: Integrating data → Contextualizing information → Detecting anomalies → Anticipating risks → Optimizing operations → Supporting decision-making.
